AFWB Class Descriptions
2009 series
Important GOLDEN Workshop
Important Golden Workshops focus on one artist or one concept with study, discussion and reflection on the presented topic. Artists create paintings in the spirit of this artist. This series, SOAR by Example, artists will explore new Golden OPEN paints cobined with other Golden materials. We will investigate our ability to circulate freely between an object and its environment. We will observe the distinction between flat planes and those with volume. This workshop sets the direction for all classes.
Anything Goes ART
You play with collage, charcoal, crayons or paint and build small masterpieces and Paint by Puzzle™ paintings.
EXPLORE Experience Enjoy and Engage
An open ended Golden Paints workshop where we select gels, mediums and paints to achieve our desired results. Participants are encouraged to bring in work to further or evolve in the group. Instruction given upon request.
Honest Earnest ARTIST
Participants create paintings studying established artists, theories and concepts. This class is an abbreviated version of the Important Golden Workshop.
Growing ART
Classes are tailored toward the individual's style and their capabilities. This class uses exercises where play and group work is emphasized. Students create individual and Paint by Puzzle™ paintings using paint and textured gells.
Art for the Special Child
This is a nurturing class geared specifically for young artists with special needs, but all children are welcome. We will explore paint, gels, charcoal and other materials. We will study known artists and their images as a reference for exercises to discover our artist within. Offered by the City of Palo Alto.
Escorting Each Other in Art
Parent and child play together. Each adult must be accompanied by a young person. This class uses exercises where play and group work is emphasized. Individual and Paint by Puzzle™ paintings using paint and gels will be created. We will focus on the elements of art; line, shape, texture, value and color.
Spring 2008 series FROM THE GROUND UP
Nature and plants are the symbols. Classes will focus on the transformation of plants.
Art for Well Beings offers these classes:
Paint by Puzzle ©
The paint by puzzle workshop was developed by artist Judy Gittelsohn as a way to offer a relaxing (you don’t have to make it look like something) and rousing (you paint with a group) painting experience that highlights the individual artist and creates a one collective painting. No painting experience is required. This class is very serious play.
Each session participants will work on completing a composite painting. Artists will fill in their outlined areas with Golden Acrylic paints — giving artists an opportunity to explore mixing colors and enjoying the painting process with out worry. Then, when the individual panels are complete, we puzzle the panels together to create a group painting. The final painting is always a surprise. Our strokes are unique as well as our application — Each person uses blue differently. Paint by puzzle paintings are a marvelous mosaic.
All materials provided. Please wear clothes for painting.
Unfurling Healing art
This Class is designed for people recovering from illness or injury. The goals are to spread out or open up. We will work on recognizing and soothing feminine expressions which support healing through painting.
Spring season will focus on nurturing the Kindhearted Cycle of Plant life — starting with representing seeds, the series will progress with plants as seedlings, rooting, surfacing, sprouting, blossoming, flowering, proliferating and expiring. Paintings, artworks, real plants and images of plants — we will be the reference for perception in our individual and group exercises. No previous experience is required. Open to the public.
All materials provided. Please wear clothes for painting.
Elements of Elemental Art
Encouraging discovery of the inner artist who has so much to say, this class is geared toward people with developmental disabilities and is open to the public. Participants are the developmentally disabled population from C.A.R.’s (Community Association for Rehabilitation) after school recreation program. Our first series will be Plant It Paint it. This is a study of plants in their garden. We will use group and individual exercises to experience the cycle of plants from seedling to fruit bearing. A warm group welcomes you to join us.
Private / semi private classes
Tailored classes / Team tailored classes
Private and semi private classes are available upon request. A curriculum is structured around the natural course of learning and desires of the student, group or team.
Please contact Judy Gittelsohn to arrange a class for yourself or your group.
Teach the teachers
In these sessions, we study how to implement a specific project or a curriculum. Practicing the exercises involving the process and steps of a project — we use the direct trial-and-error experience method and incorporate the use of movement and words to bring the visual art exercise to life. The goal is to understand the exercise, infuse meaning in the process and to dissect the points of learning and growth for your particular recipients. What are the important aspects of this exercise? What can be streamlined? How can this be tailored for your group?
Girls to women
Currently conducted offsite , Art for Well Beings is working with the Girls to Women organization of East Palo Alto. Our aim is to create a book of their artwork that supports and encourages the girls in their development.
Chick Think Tank
Art For Well Beings promotes a female model of learning – an education of unfolding and discovery. To strengthen and broaden this idea –AFWB will hold a weekly discussion group with a focus on this topic, present projects relating to this mission and foster a discussion about what advances this style of learning.
